My Story
Born in Surrey BC, Canada, Mark was attracted to the guitar at 8 years old and began taking lessons at the Douglas Academy of Music studying under Carol Porter and David Lund. He learned bass guitar in school band and stage band and eventually taught other students in his senior years. He went on to study at Douglas College, Capilano University and Vancouver Community College. He played with Funk, Punk, Ska , Reggae group Roots Roundup in their heyday in the *80s and 90s and continues with the group in their modern reincarnation. He also plays with Afro- Fusion pioneers Zimbamoto. He has played with groups such as The Hit, The Unknown Soldiers, Idle Peasantry, Space 9, FreeFlow, Goby Catt, Boomdaddy, Dubfreque, Ngoma, Rio Samaya and others.
A diverse and sensitive player, Mark has absorbed smatterings of different styles such as Classical, Rock, Jazz, African, Reggae, Funk, Metal and Country. His travels have taken him to India where he studied sitar and the basics of Karnatic classical music. He has recently returned to studying classical guitar in the last few years completing RCM levels 8,9 & 10..
