ALWAYS LEARNING…

I teach mainly the guitar, bass and ukulele but I’m also comfortable with beginner and intermediate drums, mandolin and piano. I really love to teach and regardless of where you are on an instrument in terms of technique there is always so much to learn and discover. It does take a lot of hard work and determination to improve, however. There’s no real quick-fix. As a teacher I try to find out what it is that the student is passionate about and bring that out in them. Everyone has a unique and individual voice and way of learning.

I remember how exciting it was when my teacher knew how to play the song that I really wanted to learn. It was like they could do magic. And the fact that they could show me how to play it too was the initial guidance that I needed to learn how to learn. I try to remember that when I’m teaching.

It’s pretty amazing that, whether you’re learning some advanced improvisation theory or trying to tie your first two chords together, the level of joy and satisfaction can be equal. There are so many aspects to music and life. In that sense I end up learning just as much as the students. Always learning…

The Guitar

The guitar attracted me at a young age. To have grown as a young boy playing guitar into my adulthood has been a special gift which i feel intensely grateful for. Few instruments can do so much: chords, melody, rhythm, lead, delicate wood rich sweetness to smouldering, dark fuzz tones. And capable of generating its own unique, abstract sound effects. It is regularly revealing new things to me. The more you play the more you will discover ! That is absolutely true with an instrument. And to have achieved a little bit of facility on the guitar is a very satisfying experience.

The Bass

I think I see the Electric bass as a natural extension of the guitar but also really as a completely different instrument , in many ways. Yeah it’s the same notes but the attack , the tone and the role of the instrument occupies a different space than guitar. It’s so much about the pocket and what the drums are doing too. Bass is the place.

The Ukulele

Such a small, portable guitar-like instrument with a beautiful airy tuning . The mellow tone and high pitched melody of the instrument make it a unique to its other stringed instrument relatives.

I also teach at Staccato Music Studios and Bonsor Rec. Center for the Burnaby Parks Board, Both are excellent places of learning with many gifted and inspiring teachers available.
